Since I completed my last assignment, over 2 weeks ago, there has been no new inflow of projects, nor was there anything in pipeline. I have been staying up late into the night applying for assignments, but yielded nada.
Out of desperation, I logged onto freelancer.com, which by past experience I know is an abode for $1 articles. With my rich chronicle of writings, I was positive that I would bag atleast one assignment, which can pay my bills for the forthcoming dinner party planned with friends.
After a whole week of query letters, one desperate project manager warmed up to my profile. The brief given to me was that I had to complete a 50-page eBook in 4 days, without any other details. A chime rang deep inside, but I quietened it, sinceĀ this $100 would adequately pay off some piling bills.
When the email of the thumbs up came, my heart sank 2 feet under my chair. Each chapter was 500 words! After doing some quick math, I realised that I was expected to churn out ORIGINAL 25,000 words, including all the research. I began contemplating how I would achieve this target, how many hours of the day and night would this need.
I took a break from my dire circumstances, and surfed through my GReader, where I came across http://bit.ly/dxJYgt. As I read through it, I realised how ridiculous I was being. The project I was being offered was more absurd than the one put up as an example.
All of us have bad days. Does not mean I need to stoop myself this low.
And just to drive this point home, the cosmos conjured up 2 hot leads! I’ll be meeting one of them tomorrow, and have a telephone interview lined up with the other.
Lorna Doone Brewer – you just saved me from blockading my own career path.
